Things I Didn't Learn in College

After graduating college last May, I've noticed there are many many MANY things that I still don't know how to do (mostly when it comes to living by myself). I look back and wonder: why didn't I ever learn that?!

And so, here's a list of things that I didn't learn in college:

1. How to change a tire--my dad did Junior Year of high school, but let's face it: I can't crack the lug-nuts--I don't weigh enough and I don't think I can get the tire out of the back of my car (but hello--I have OnStar and a boyfriend so it's all good)

2. How to change my oil--I know how to appear to look like I know what I'm doing when I check the dipstick, but I really have no clue. Joshua changes his oil himself so if worse comes to worse (and I can't take it to SpeeDee) he can change it.

3. How to change a headlight--J changed mine recently and to do so requires to take off the whole front bumper--NO THANKS--SpeeDee is quickly becoming my best friend.

4. Basically anything else with cars--It stresses me out and I will never be one of those "good with cars" girls.

5. How to sew--don't even know how to sew a button. I'm hopeless.

6. How to cook--I can follow a recipe and I'm great at microwavable meals, but can't make anything from scratch. I'd love to take a cooking class.

7. How to file taxes--like why is it so hard...

8. How to find a stud in a wall. I've just been nailing (heavy) things into the wall all willy nilly so HOPEFULLY nothing falls off of the wall in the middle of the night. Plus don't they have screwdrivers that do that these days?

9. How to make my apartment NOT smell like cigarette smoke. My neighbors smoke. If you're going to smoke, that's on you, but I do not want to come home to a cheap hotel "smoking room" smelling apartment (the smell of my candles + smoke). Seriously. Currently I have a wall flower and three candles. Any other ideas??

10. How to parallel park. I guess I should have learned that before college anyways, but my driving instructor basically did it for me. On the bright side, they have cars that do it for you! (Note: I'd still like to accomplish this)

My dad will argue that while I may not have learned these things, I did learn how to think critically--which aids in learning these skills/solving problems. But still.
Guess I'll have to put some thought into how I'm going to solve these problems...
because {my dad} said so!

  2. Yes, yes, yes, yes. All of the above! I made my mom teach me how to sew a button, and I still don't do it right. The button stayed on for like two days and then fell off. Im helpless aha

  3. When I picked up my W2 from work last week it hit me that I have zero idea how to file my taxes either. It seems like colleges should have to teach you how to do that before graduating.

    1. It's so stressful too..like just let me keep my money so we don't have to do this

  4. Last time I visited my parents, my dad gave me a long lesson about car maintenance. He even let me wear one of his mechanic jumpsuits so that I could lay on the driveway under the car! I do actually change the headlights myself now (my car sounds way easier than yours) but it's so cheap to just take it to Jiffylube....

  6. Ugh my neighbors smoke in their apartment too - its the worst! I get horrible migraines from it… like just go downstairs. So far I just constantly have a candle or incense lit. My boyfriend has recommended some sort of spray called, Ozium? Its supposed to make all smoke smells disappear right away!

    1. Constant candles are a must! Hmm I'll for sure have to check that out! Some days I'm seconds from banging on their door!
